About Me
A Little Bit About Me, Eccentric Grandma
The site is named Eccentric Grandma because, I guess some people find me a little eccentric or, so they say. I like and do normal mom and grandma stuff, but I also like to do a lot of things that some people don’t consider normal (what is normal) for a grandma. I’m sure you will discover a lot of that, as the site progresses.
I am also eclectic as well as eccentric. I am sure you will find a wide variety of things on Eccentric Grandma to keep you entertained. I have soooo many interests that I never get them all done. You might say, I’m a “Jack of all trades”. I don’t believe I’m master of any, but… the important thing is being able to do a job, do it well and have fun. So hey, I may as well try everything I can, since it makes life more fun! I wish I could include all the crafts, projects, stories and adventures of the past. I may get a few in, but there just isn’t time to recreate them all, and I am sure I have forgotten many of them.
As one of my eccentricities, I went back to college a couple of years ago to get a degree in Computer Programming. I had a degree in Mathematics, but Computer Science-Engineering was my original degree choice. Things just didn’t work out back then, I had too many other obligations and being a mom was more important to me. I had enough hours to get a degree in Mathematics, so I went for it but I have always wanted to finish my Computer Science degree.
My two youngest boys started college, the youngest was doing dual credit, and after two semesters they decided to switch schools. They didn’t feel like they were learning what they needed to and felt that going to Texas State Technical College would be better for them. They wanted me to go with them to check it out. We happened to go on a day when they had recruiters in the Student Resource Center. It was so exciting and there were so many different technologies going on there. I got this overwhelming feeling that I should go too. There were so many things running through my head; I’m too old (58), the boys wouldn’t want me going to the same school with them, I don’t need to waste the money, on and on.
The most pressing thing was that I didn’t want the boys to be embarrassed or think that I was hovering over them, but going back to school just kept cycling through my mind. I finally summoned the courage to ask them how they felt about it. I was really surprised, they were actually excited that I wanted to go to school with them and even encouraged me. Who would have imagined? So we took a tour of the Computer Technology Department, and we all applied for enrollment.
I became as nervous about how my friends, the teachers and other students would react, as I had been about my own sons. I don’t really know why I cared what other people would think, but I did. However, I decided to put my foot forward and go anyway. My friends thought I was a little crazy (I’m sure they think that a lot), but the teachers and other students were all very encouraging. They treated me just like another student. There was a lot of collaboration, many of the students went out of their way to help me and many of them asks for my help. I was actually very impressed with the students that went there. The Computer Programming Technology degree is not an easy degree and many of the students who started did not last more than two semesters, but the students that remained were very dedicated and hardworking. Texas State Technical College is not a party school! It takes hard work and a lot of time. Believe me I slept very little and spent most of my time writing computer programs. I graduated with honors in August 2019. Whew, it is over. Was it worth it?
Things have changed a lot since I was in college before. Programming IS NOT the same, and they don’t teach any of the languages I had taken before, so I had to start from the beginning.
A few of my current projects include computer programming, designing and building a roomsaver bed for my youngest son, making and binding an art journal with my oldest granddaughter, wood burning with my oldest grandson, and creating this website. A few of my more typical interests are gardening, cooking, canning & preserving, sewing, crocheting, cross stitch, photography, graphic design, low carb living, organizing (although you can’t usually tell by looking at my house), anything computer related, most things crafty and especially my kids and grandkids. I have a very long list of things that intrigue me, and I’m sure things will evolve along the way. I love creating things and it is even more fun when I can do it with other people.
My hope is that I might help you through life’s adventure in some small way, whether it be a life tip that makes something easier for you, inspiration to go beyond your comfort zone or just a smile and little laugh as you go through your day.
I do have one fear about starting this website, it is that I will not have enough time to let you in on most of the activities here. I have wanted to do a blog for a long time (many years). I am just so busy living life, it is hard to write about the journey. I started building a site once upon a time, long, long ago; when I broke my ankle and had some free time; but alas, my ankle healed quickly and life overtook me once again. So wish me luck, pray for me, encourage me and push me forward. I believe things will go differently this time.
